At CDS, our Visual Arts program is designed to inspire students to explore their creative potential and develop their own artistic voice. It’s rewarding to watch students grow not just in their technical skills, but in their confidence to express unique perspectives through art and developing a deep appreciation for the power of art in both their personal lives and the world around them
Seth Firestone, Upper School DP Art Teacher

Art is my favorite subject because I get to use all kinds of colors and materials to create things. I love making pictures that tell stories or show how I feel. The best part is seeing my work in the art show and knowing everyone can enjoy it too!
Elementary Art Student

Lower School
Building Foundations of Creativity and Expression
At the Early Childhood Campus, students explore color and various media, developing an understanding of space and form. In Elementary School, students focus on the creative process, self-expression, and appreciation of fine art, while also integrating the IB Units of Inquiry into their lessons. Their work is showcased at the annual art show.

Middle School
Exploring Artistic Techniques Through Observation, Imagination, and Skill Development
In Middle School, students refine their skills and build their artistic voice through a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking. The focus is on developing studio habits and creative practices while drawing inspiration from contemporary artworks.

Upper School
Advancing Artistic Voice Through Critical Thinking, Studio Practice, and Portfolio Development
Upper School students can further their artistic development by participating in a wide range of courses, from painting and sculpture to photography and digital arts. They engage in problem-solving and critical thinking, while also exploring art history and current trends. Those pursuing their passion for the arts can take part in the IB Diploma Programme in Visual Arts, which emphasizes both teacher-directed and student-initiated projects, fostering creativity, technique, and understanding of art in a global context.
