The music program at CDS fosters creativity, discipline, and a passion for music.
From early music exploration in the ECC to advanced performance opportunities in Upper School, students develop their musical talents through band, choir, and individual studies. With numerous concerts and showcases, CDS provides students with the chance to perform, collaborate, and grow as musicians in a supportive and inspiring environment.

Lower School Music
Exploring Music Through Fun, Creativity, and Collaboration
The Lower School music program at CDS introduces young students to the joys of music through fun, interactive learning. Students explore a variety of instruments, develop foundational skills in rhythm and melody, and engage in group performances. This program fosters creativity, teamwork, and a love for music, setting the stage for lifelong musical growth and appreciation.
At the ECC, students sing songs, do finger plays and basic movement exercises, and play musical instruments throughout the day. In addition to daily music activities that enrich classroom units of inquiry, students have music once a week with the music teacher.
Music education in Elementary School is a vital component of children's learning and development. Students in 1st - 5th grades learn music fundamentals and concepts that establish a foundation for being lifelong musicians.
Beginning in the 2nd grade, students have the opportunity to extend their musical instruction beyond the regular school day. 2nd-5th graders can participate in the Elementary Chorus and will perform throughout the year. In addition, 4th and 5th graders can be involved in Elementary Musical Theatre where they will learn to work as an ensemble to produce musical theatre productions during the year. 2nd-5th graders interested in exploring the world of instrumental music have the opportunity to join Band and Orchestra Lab.

Middle School Music
Developing Musical Skills Through Creativity, Collaboration, and Exploration
The CDS Middle School music program offers students the opportunity to explore Band, Orchestra, and Guitar, with courses designed to support musicians of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Through technical skill development and learning the language of music, students build a strong foundation to become independent musicians and valuable team players in ensemble performances.
Middle School musicians showcase their talents at annual December and May concerts, with additional volunteer performance opportunities throughout the year. Students are also invited to apply for our Jr. Tri-M chapter, the national music honor society focused on service through music, further enriching their musical journey.
The CDS Middle School music program has produced numerous All-State musicians, showcasing the exceptional talent and dedication of our students. These young musicians consistently demonstrate excellence and are recognized at the state level for their skill and commitment to their craft.

Upper School Music
Refining Musical Artistry Through Critical Thinking, Creative Expression, and Ensemble Work
The Upper School music program at CDS offers advanced opportunities for students to refine their talents in Band, Orchestra, and Guitar while exploring their creativity and musicality. Students can showcase their skills in dynamic performances throughout the year, with many earning prestigious honors like All-State recognition.
For those seeking a deeper academic and artistic challenge, the IB Diploma Programme (DP) Music course allows students to analyze, create, and perform music at an advanced level. Additionally, students can join the Tri-M Music Honor Society, where they use their talents to give back to the community through service projects and performances.
Similar to the Middle School program, the Upper School musicians have enjoyed success at the All-State level and beyond. With several of our DP music students going on to play at the collegiate level

Music Enrichment
CDS offers a robust music enrichment program that allows students in grades 2 and up to extend their musical instruction beyond the school day as part of the Beyond the Bell program. Elementary students can participate in Chorus (grades 2-5) or explore Musical Theatre (grades 4-5), while 4th and 5th graders can also join the Introduction to Beginning Band during CDS Beyond the Bell programs.
Middle and Upper School students can further enhance their skills in specialized groups, including Woodwind, High Brass, Low Brass, and Percussion, fostering a deeper connection to their instruments and collaborative performance.
