The IB Journey at Carrollwood Day School
At Carrollwood Day School, IB isn't something students begin in high school. It starts in Preschool and grows with them every year. As the only Preschool through Grade 12 IB World School on Florida's west coast, CDS offers students a complete IB continuum, allowing each stage of learning to intentionally build upon the next.
Primary Years Programme (PYP)
In the early years, curiosity drives learning. Students explore big ideas through inquiry, collaboration, creativity, and hands-on experiences. A second grade City Project, for example, invites students to think like entrepreneurs as they imagine, design, and build a city. Fifth graders have explored scientific concepts by designing solar-powered ovens to make s’mores, while the Elementary STEM Fair gives students opportunities to investigate questions and develop their own solutions. By fifth grade, students bring these skills together through the PYP Exhibition, conducting in-depth research into issues that matter to them and taking action based on what they discover.
These experiences help students develop the habits that define lifelong learners. They learn to ask meaningful questions, pursue answers, work through challenges, and connect what they are learning in the classroom to the world around them.
Middle Years Programme (MYP)
As students grow, they take greater ownership of their learning. In the Middle Years Programme, students move beyond simply acquiring knowledge to applying it in meaningful ways. Sixth graders, for example, research the Renaissance and Shakespeare before transforming their learning into interactive exhibits and performances. Eighth graders identify issues they care about, research their communities, and develop MYP Community Projects designed to create positive change. By 10th grade, students complete an independent Personal Project, pursuing a topic of personal interest while demonstrating the research, communication, and self-management skills they have developed throughout the MYP.
Through these experiences, students learn to think across disciplines, ask deeper questions, solve authentic problems, and see themselves as capable of using what they know to make a difference.
Diploma Programme (DP)
In grades 11 and 12, students may pursue the internationally respected IB Diploma Programme. At CDS, students put their learning into practice through experiences that require independence, curiosity, and sustained inquiry. Through the Extended Essay, students pursue a question of their own choosing and conduct original research over an extended period of time. In Theory of Knowledge, they examine questions such as “Why do we seek knowledge?” and consider how we know what we know. Through Creativity, Activity, and Service, students apply their interests and skills beyond the classroom while contributing to their communities.
The result is an educational experience that asks students not simply to master challenging material, but to think deeply about it, question assumptions, pursue their own lines of inquiry, and use what they learn with purpose. These experiences prepare students for the demands of college while helping them become thoughtful, independent thinkers prepared to contribute beyond the classroom.
