Ever wanted to visit five countries in one day? At Carrollwood Day School’s annual Elementary Academic Extravaganza, students did just that, setting off on a whirlwind journey around the world without ever leaving campus. The Academic Extravaganza is a beloved elementary tradition at CDS, and every year the event features a new theme that brings learning to life in creative ways. This year’s Social Studies Edition invited students to explore cultures, geography, and global traditions through an immersive “around the world” adventure designed to spark curiosity and discovery.

The journey began at the CDS International Airport in the Elementary Courtyard. A s they arrived, students walked down the runway, while stacked luggage, and airport themed props transformed the courtyard into a bustling departure terminal. Flight Attendant Mrs. Davis kicked things off with an energetic pre flight speech that got students excited and ready for their global adventure.

With passports in hand, students began rotating through five mystery destinations every twenty minutes. Their challenge was to use sensory, visual, and physical clues to determine which country they had landed in before recording their guess in their passport. It quickly became a race against time as students worked together to decode each location before moving on to the next stop.

Teachers and dedicated parents alike served as enthusiastic travel guides throughout the experience, fully embracing the spirit of the event by dressing in costume and leading hands on activities that represented their country’s culture and traditions. At each destination, students received a country brochure filled with facts, cultural hints, and additional clues. Some hints were straightforward, while others were designed to keep students guessing just a little longer. As they pieced together the evidence, students became detectives, using teamwork and critical thinking to uncover where they were in the world.

The journey included stops in Japan, Switzerland, Argentina, Morocco, and the United States, with each location offering its own memorable experiences.

  • In Japan, students gathered in the MPR to watch a karate demonstration, learn a few words during a mini language lesson, and create origami hearts and stars. They even sampled seaweed snacks while discovering clues about a country made up of islands, known for its cherry blossoms and lightning fast trains.

  • In Switzerland, snow floated through the air as students joined a soft snowball fight and warmed up with hot chocolate and cheese fondue. Clues about towering mountains, the famous Matterhorn, and Swiss chocolate helped students connect the experience to the alpine nation.

  • At Argentina, students chose between two lively activities: testing their soccer skills or learning the steps of the tango. Hints about soccer championships and vibrant music pointed them toward a country with a rich cultural tradition and a deep love for the game.

  • The Morocco destination immersed students in the sights and scents of a traditional souk. They explored spices, created mosaic inspired crafts, received henna tattoos, sipped mint “tea” lemonade, and browsed a jewelry station that brought the atmosphere of a Moroccan marketplace to life.

  • Finally, students returned to the United States, where they met George Washington and explored clues connected to the nation’s landmarks and achievements. From the Statue of Liberty and the Golden Gate Bridge to Mount Rushmore and the Grand Canyon, the experience included a NASA mission control board and side by side obstacle courses inspired by America’s national parks.

After completing their final stop, students returned to the CDS International Airport where one last surprise awaited them. Mrs. Wilson greeted travelers as the Statue of Liberty, while Mrs. Martens led a spirited performance of the national anthem as students gathered together one final time before heading into Spring Break.

The Elementary Academic Extravaganza continues to be one of the most anticipated days of the year because it turns learning into an experience. Each year the theme changes, but the excitement remains the same as students explore, solve puzzles, and discover that the world is full of fascinating places waiting to be understood.
