9th & 10th Grade MAP Testing
Dear 9th and 10th Grade Parents:
Beginning August 30th, your child will be taking his/her fall round of MAP testing, Measures of Academic Progress™ (MAP), for this school year. We give students MAP tests a minimum of twice a year (fall & spring) to determine each child's instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year, in the areas of reading and math.
This fall, these test sessions will be completed virtually via Zoom on Monday, August 30th, and Tuesday, August 31st. Please have students access this link promptly at 8:30am for the Zoom meeting on those days. The meeting ID is 841 1959 9649 and the Passcode is 660283 if needed. All students will be muted for the duration of testing and the chat will be used for communication with the testing proctor. There will be a revised schedule those days, so please review the below schedule with your child prior to the testing days:
Monday, August 30th
Tuesday, August 31st
As a result of adjustments made due to COVID-19 and the construction of our new Center for Innovation, this year all 9th and 10th grade Upper School students will be using their personal computers to test at home virtually. The test is untimed, so determining a quiet space where your child can focus ahead of time is highly recommended. Google Chrome will be the domain we will use to log on to the testing site. Please make sure your child has Chrome downloaded on his/her computer prior to testing. We also suggest that you encourage your child to take the test seriously and do his/her very best in each section. The results of this test will be used to evaluate student strengths and weaknesses moving forward through the academic year and will help teachers to reinforce any student deficit resulting from COVID-19. Remediation and supplemental programs will be put in place for students, as needed, based on student growth scores. Teachers of all subjects will be able to use the MAP data to help support the individual student in his/her future learning.
Please be sure your child is prepared to test by allowing for a good night's sleep and providing a healthy breakfast. The class homework and assessments may carry on as usual, as students do not need to study for this test. It is very important that your child is present and signs on to the Zoom on time both days. If a student has special testing accommodations through our Learning Specialist, Shelly Hollingsworth, and should need time beyond the testing window provided, we will make those arrangements as they arise.
MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for each child's level of learning. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If your child answers incorrectly, the next question is easier. Results provide a detailed picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below his/her grade level. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.
Soon after the test, you will receive a report showing your child's performance through the mail. A letter of explanation will accompany your child's results. If at any time you have questions regarding the results, please feel free to contact your child's English or math teacher or contact me directly.
We see great benefits in using an assessment tool that focuses on each child's individual growth and achievement. With parents and teachers partnering to help all students learn, together we can have a profound positive effect on the lives of our children.
