New Middle School Club

Why learn Greek and Latin roots? Did you know over 60 percent of all English words have Greek or Latin roots? And that figure rises to over 90% for science and technology vocabulary!

The invitation from Mrs. Kiner, MS Language and Literature teacher, for this new club read, "Bring your lunch to feed your brains – they’re going to need it!"

The new Greek & Latin Roots Club will meet every Wednesday during lunch to learn Greek and Latin roots. Having this skill in their reading toolbox will pay off for club members in a big way. Many English words are built with Greek and Latin roots and understanding these word-building-blocks will give students the power to crack the code of unfamiliar complicated words. Understanding Greek and Latin roots helps build vocabulary more quickly than learning definitions of individual words... especially since one Latin root can generate 100 words! It also will help students on major standardized tests like the PSAT, ACT, and SAT.

Each week students will be introduced to two types of Greek or Latin roots. Throughout the lesson students will work with Greek and Latin roots and apply what they have learned in the course of the club. Working together, students will match the new words with their meaning and collaborate on a story at the end of the lesson. They will also be encouraged to use these words in their every day language. Combining ancient languages with 21st century technology, Mrs. Kiner will use Nearpod, an interactive tool to follow the progress each learner is making through each lesson.

Here is the agenda for the first five sessions:

  • Week 1 - Greek root (fer) Latin root (port) Latin prefix (trans)
  • Week 2 - Latin root (stel) Greek root (astr, aster) Greek suffix (ist)
  • Week 3 - Latin root (dict) Greek root (graph) Latin prefix (co)
  • Week 4 - Latin root (pos, pon) Latin prefix (com)
  • Week 5 - Latin root (vert, ves) Latin prefix (de) Latin prefix (re)
