In June 2024, a group of students from the CDS Upper School embarked on an unforgettable journey to Switzerland, followed by a trip to Iasi, Romania, to participate in the "Mountain of Science" conference hosted by Paradis International College. This event brought together young scholars from around the world, including peers from Chile, Germany, and India. They were under the guidance of Upper School Dean of Students, Liz Eby, and Upper School Humanities Teacher and Department Chair, Jen Stanley.
Arriving in Iasi, our students were warmly welcomed with the traditional Romanian hospitality, setting the stage for a week of exploration, learning, and collaboration. The conference was not just an academic event but a cultural experience that broadened their perspectives and deepened their understanding of the world.
Throughout the conference, our students collaborated with their international peers, and participated in a series of hands-on scientific workshops, lectures, and activities that pushed their creativity and critical thinking to new heights.
They embarked on an adventurous climb up Via Ferrata Astragalus, the largest steel cable route in Romania, showcasing their courage and teamwork. In addition to this thrilling experience, they participated in a variety of enriching workshops, including a sensory room exploration, a Virtual Reality science session, and creative pottery and perfume-making workshops. These activities not only challenged them physically but also engaged their senses and creativity, making the conference a truly multifaceted learning experience.
Our Upper School students also attended speeches by industry leaders in the sciences, including Ultramarathon Runner Tiberiu Ușeriu, Neurosurgeon Bogdan Iliescu, and Astronomer Cătălin Beldea.
We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and dedication during the "Mountain of Science" conference. This experience truly embodied the essence of experiential learning, giving them the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-world situations, in the breathtaking setting of the Romanian mountains. This hands-on approach to education allowed them to see the practical applications of their studies and the profound impact science can have on the world around them. Their passion and commitment have shown that they are capable of making a meaningful difference not only within our school community but also on a global scale. We are excited to see how these experiences will shape their futures and the positive impact they will continue to create.
