Upon graduation from CDS in 2023, George Henry Cann-Gudat, affectionately known as GH, embarked on an extraordinary academic journey, spending his first year of college studying abroad in Paris, France. GH's acceptance to George Washington University as a Political Science major came with one stipulation: he would begin his college career by spending his first year at the American University of Paris. With a solid foundation in French, having studied the language from 6th to 12th grade, GH was well-prepared to accept this opportunity to navigate college life in the City of Light.
GH was constantly reminded of the city's beauty, as his classes were right next to the Eiffel Tower, and the apartment he shared with other university students was on the iconic Champs-Élysées. While the locations were undoubtedly glamorous, they also presented challenges. During his stay, GH experienced firsthand the political unrest that often swept through the city, with protests disrupting his daily routine and confining him to his apartment. As a Political Science major, GH was thrilled to study another country's political system, and witnessing this unrest provided him with a unique perspective, allowing him to see how different political structures operate. It also sparked an interest in a potential career as an ambassador at an embassy in Europe, where he could combine his passion for politics with his love for the continent.
When GH wasn’t studying, he enjoyed immersing himself in Parisian culture. One of his favorite aspects of living in Paris was the public transportation system. He loved the convenience and efficiency of getting around the city on the metro, but he also loved exploring the charming streets of Paris on his bike. Another highlight for GH was the walkability of Paris. This allowed him to sample his favorite French pastry, the croissant, at many of the charming bakeries and coffee shops scattered throughout the city.
GH's experience abroad wasn't without its challenges. As someone with diabetes, he initially had concerns about managing his health in a foreign country. GH was relieved to find that he had access to a primary doctor, a diabetes specialist who made house visits, and a supply of insulin that was provided free of charge. These medical benefits reassured him that studying abroad was possible despite his health concerns, and gave him the confidence to consider studying abroad again, next time in another European country.
While GH is already anticipating what his future may hold, he also takes great pride in reflecting on the hard work that brought him to where he is today. GH credits much of his success to his time at CDS, where the small school size fostered close relationships with teachers. This environment taught him the importance of seeking out help and building connections with professors, a skill that has served him well in college.
The International Baccalaureate program at CDS was instrumental in developing his essay writing and research skills, which he found invaluable during his year abroad. The college counseling department provided him with crucial insights in his senior year that guided him through the college application process.
Perhaps most importantly, CDS encouraged GH to take risks and embrace new opportunities. This "just go for it" mentality gave him the confidence to study abroad in Paris, an experience that has shaped his worldview and opened doors to future adventures. GH’s year abroad in Paris broadened his horizons, deepened his understanding of global politics, and solidified his aspirations for the future. He now looks forward to the next chapter of his academic and professional life with excitement and determination, and the CDS community will be beaming with Patriot Pride as we follow along on his journey.
