Exploring Antarctica: Hallie Sands' Journey of Resilience and Discovery
CDS Class of 2022 Alumni Goes to Antarctica

Hallie Sands, a Class of 2022 alumna from Carrollwood Day School, embarked on an extraordinary journey to Antarctica as part of a last-minute study abroad program through Xavier University.

The journey to Antarctica commenced at the end of December 2023 and lasted for 2.5 weeks. Before departure, Hallie had a crucial safety meeting to prepare and understand what essentials to pack for the unique experience.

Hallie had the unique chance to immerse herself in the remote and awe-inspiring landscapes of Antarctica alongside 85 other participants, including 16 from Xavier University and representatives from 20 countries. Despite the inherent challenges of such an expedition, Hallie found the experience to be relaxed and enjoyable, characterized by deep conversations, games, and educational talks about the diverse wildlife of the region.

One of the highlights of Hallie's Antarctic adventure was the opportunity to interact with a variety of wildlife, including penguins, seals, whales, orcas, and birds. However, the journey was not without its challenges, particularly during the perilous Drape Passage, considered one of the most dangerous seas in the world, where participants spent three days navigating rough waters.

Despite the risks, Hallie and her roommate embraced the adventure, navigating the icy terrain aboard small boats and enjoying the novelty of experiencing sunny conditions 24/7. With limited opportunities for travel to Antarctica each year, Hallie's impromptu decision to join the expedition provided her with unforgettable memories and invaluable experiences that will undoubtedly shape her future endeavors in communications and design.

As a major in Xavier's School of Communications, Hallie is double-focused on advertising and PR, or digital design. On looking back at her time at CDS Hallie recalls the MYP Personal Project and how it gave her a renewed sense of focus and purpose. "Having a focus and a purpose aside from everything else really levels everything else out," she reflects. Hallie's dream job after college is to be involved in travel and the media.
