Duke of Edinburgh Award at Carrollwood Day School: A Journey of Growth and Discovery
DOE

At Carrollwood Day School, we are proud to offer students the opportunity to participate in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. This globally recognized program is designed to help students build confidence, resilience, communication, and teamwork skills, while embarking on an adventure of self-discovery and personal growth.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is more than just an activity; it's a journey. Students engage in four key elements: physical recreation, learning new skills, volunteering service, and taking part in an adventure. Over the course of several months, participants are guided by mentors, assessors, and coordinators who offer support and ensure that each student progresses through their personalized path to success.

Behind our program at CDS is Mr. Pedro Miller, dedicated Duke of Edinburgh Award Coordinator and Upper School Counselor. Mr. Miller’s passion for the outdoors has been a defining influence on the success of the Award at CDS. With a background in Boy Scouts and a wealth of experience leading high adventures in places like Minnesota and Canada, he brings a deep love for nature and adventure to his role. His journey as an Award Coordinator has been a professional highlight, as he gets to share his enthusiasm for the outdoors with students, while fostering their emotional and physical well-being.

Mr. Miller was recently chosen to be spotlighted by the Duke of Edinburgh Award because of his commitment as an Award Coordinator. He shared with the organization why the program has been such a success at CDS.

“Upon joining our school community in 2021, I quickly realized the pace and pressure our students face as they navigate sports, academics, and life. One of the most rewarding aspects of the Award Program has been seeing students expand their life skills, outdoor enthusiasm, and resilience. It’s incredible to witness them find freedom from anxiety, with a level of presence and comfort they’ve never experienced before.”

This winter, 24 CDS students, along with some incredible volunteers, took part in an outdoor adventure that exemplified everything the program stands for. Over the course of two nights camping in the Florida wilderness, students hiked more than 10 miles along the Florida Trail. They were challenged physically and mentally, yet each student was empowered to practice self-sufficiency, problem-solving, and teamwork. They had the chance to disconnect from devices and engage in dialogue that created an environment where their communication skills with adults and their peers flourished. While the break from the daily demands of technology was welcomed, the weather was very unforgiving. With freezing temperatures during the night, their sense of camaraderie strengthened as they braved the elements together. Mr. Miller and the CDS community are incredibly grateful for the volunteers that made this experience possible for our students:

  • Mr. Len Babbitt, whose unwavering support continues to elevate the program.
  • Michelle Kunz, for her continued support in ordering food and equipment over the last four years.
  • Mr. Richard Luisi, who not only volunteered but also ensured safety by doubling as security throughout the trip.
  • Mrs. Ana Morillo, a steadfast supporter for nearly three years.
  • Officer Miguel Ubiera, who continues to support from afar by completing final reports for student's Adventurous Journey trips.
  • Ms. Karly Westfall, a first-time volunteer whose positive attitude made an immediate impact.

Mr. Miller’s commitment to providing outdoor experiences that help students connect with nature, themselves, and their peers is what makes the Duke of Edinburgh Award such a meaningful part of the CDS experience. As he reflects, he shares the following sentiment.

“The most rewarding aspect of this role is seeing students practice self-resilience, cultivate a passion for the outdoors, and experience true freedom from technology. It’s a privilege to witness their personal growth throughout this program.”

The Duke of Edinburgh Award isn’t just about earning a certificate, it’s about discovering infinite potential, embracing challenges, and stepping outside the comfort zone. At CDS, our students are becoming equipped with skills that will serve them for a lifetime. Stay tuned for more updates from our students as they continue their journey through the Duke of Edinburgh Award program!
