CDS Celebrates our Artists!

Carrollwood Day School celebrates the success of several of its talented student artists.

Drop savers contest winner, Niam K.

1st grader Niam K. was named the winner of the Drop Saver poster contest, which gives Hillsborough County K-12 students the opportunity to design a poster about water conservation. The contest is sponsored by Hillsborough County Water Resources and the City of Tampa Water Department. Niam's poster was selected, along with three other students in the county, as the winning poster. At such a young age, Niam's artistic passion for conservation is truly impressive and his poster serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our natural resources.

Gabriel L., The Dali Org Surrealist Art Exhibit

Meanwhile, eighth-grader Gabriel L. has been featured in the 2023 Hillsborough Student Surrealist Art Exhibit Online, showcasing his artwork titled "A Resemblance of Me." This year, the theme is “The Shape of Dreams,” a theme that encourages students to explore the process and meaning of their dreams through time, myth, and nature. Gabriel describes his piece as “Dreams are a mixture of emotion and personal conflicts. In my art, I draw a scene of floating islands above clouds, an example of my private “utopia”. The islands’ location also resembles a self-portrait, showing how dreams reflect oneself. Below the clouds, strings of pipes and gears are attached to the floating islands. This is meant to represent how dreams have a literal meaning.” His inclusion in the exhibit is a testament to his skill as an artist and his ability to create meaningful works of art. Gabriel Lopez won Drop Saver’s contest in 2022 as a 7th grader.

Carrollwood Day School congratulates Niam K. and Gabriel L. on their impressive achievements and thanks the Hillsborough County Water Resources, the City of Tampa Water Department, and the Hillsborough Student Surrealist Art Exhibit Online for providing opportunities for students to showcase their artistic talents.

In the upper school, Carrollwood Day School is proud to announce that we have five students represented in the Hillsborough County High School Fine Arts Competition. In its 23rd year, the Calyx Schenecker Art Infinitum displays winners of the competition at Gallery 3 at the HCC Dale Mabry Campus. Currently, the following CDS artists are still in the running for the People’s Choice Award. And finally, CDS senior Kaitlyn Bradley entered the 2023 Shine A Light on Antisemitism Youth Art Contest put on by Bryan Glazer Family JCC and was selected as one of the top pieces. The art contest was developed to raise awareness of antisemitism, share educational resources, and empower individuals to stand against hatred and mitigate ignorance through the power of art. Kaitlyn's piece titled "Mezuzah" depicts a hand touching a Mezuzah, a scroll of paper inscribed with important verses from the Torah. It is customary for a Mezuzah to be hung on the doorframes within a household and to be touched every time one enters a room, to serve as a reminder of one's faith. The mezuzah in this piece has been decorated with the Hebrew translation of "love". Kaitlyn chose to include this word as it is representative of the only universal answer to hate. Love is the antithesis to hate and through love, we will be able to overcome the antisemitism that is present in the world.
