The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is an educational framework designed for students in grades 6 - 10. The MYP aims to provide a holistic education that helps students develop critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as promote intercultural understanding and global awareness. As part of the MYP, 10th-grade students undertake a Personal Project, which is an independent research project that allows them to explore their passions and interests while developing key skills and competencies.
The Personal Project is a significant component of the MYP, and it requires students to engage in a self-directed inquiry that reflects their interests and goals. The project should be a substantial and meaningful piece of work that involves planning, researching, and taking action. It should also be challenging enough for students to develop and demonstrate their skills and knowledge.
The CDS Class of 2025 Personal Projects were examples of students taking ownership of their learning and developing a sense of independence and self-motivation. This year faculty, staff, parents and fellow students were treated to projects ranging from using a 3D printer to create useful tools to learning cultural recipes passed down generations to creating lower-sugar chocolate milk! Students immersed themselves in all aspects of investing and business management and also took time to explore their mental health and how to manage it in stressful times.
This year we saw how the Personal Project enabled students to develop key skills essential for success in their academic and personal lives. These skills include time management, organization, research, communication, and critical thinking. Through the project, students can also develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world, which is essential for personal growth and development.
What a valuable opportunity for 10th-grade students to engage in self-directed learning and explore their passions and interests!
