James Mayo grew up in the Tampa area, and earned the Master of Music in French Horn Performance and a Graduate Performer’s Certificate in Wind Band/Orchestral Conducting at USF.  While attending graduate school he worked as a hornist with many local ensembles including the Tampa Bay Symphony, the Port Charlotte Symphony, and the Florida West Coast Symphony (now the Sarasota Orchestra).  With the Craig Turley Touring Orchestra, he toured in jazz/big band style orchestras for Anne Murray, Olivia Newton John and Bernadette Peters.  In 2004 James was selected as a hornist for the Chautauqua Summer Music Festival in New York State.  After Grad school, he conducted the Palmetto Youth Orchestra in Spartanburg, SC, played with the Spartanburg Philharmonic and substituted with the Greenville Symphony.  While in South Carolina, James won a full time position as second/fourth horn with the Yucatan Symphony in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.  The Yucatan Symphony often shared the stage with world class performers like Placido Domingo, The Cuban National Ballet, and Sarah Brightman.  In Merida, he had a private studio of 10-15 beginning pianists and guitarists, served as a professor of horn at “CEMUS,” the government’s music school, and traveled to perform as principal horn and guest conductor with the Cancun Chamber Orchestra.  James was also invited to conduct the Orpheus Orchestra, The Yucatan Symphony, and the Academic Chamber Orchestra of Merida.  James met his wife Roxana in Mexico and they were married in 2010.  In November of 2014 they relocated to Old Seminole Heights where they currently live with their two German shepherds and a cat named “Don Francisco, Charro de Los Lobos.”
