A Short message from Rebecca:
I just wanted to give you a quick update - After graduating from GW, I moved to Philadelphia to complete a pre-medical post-baccalaureate program at the University of Pennsylvania. I finished the program in July and have also been working as a clinical research coordinator in the emergency room at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia since moving here.
I began applying to medical school for the upcoming cycle this past June and received my first acceptance a few weeks ago. I wanted to update you, but more importantly, thank you and Mrs. Jackson for all of your help in the early stages of making my dream become a reality. All of the countless advising meetings, drop-ins to your office, and advice playing a huge role and I am endlessly grateful.
Clinical research at CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) is amazing! I am the coordinator for our ER concussion studies- our concussion studies are run in the ER out of the Injury Prevention and Research Center at CHOP so it has led me to work with some world-renowned concussion experts (including the head of NFL concussion research!). The studies that are run out of the ER are very interesting- they are looking at improving diagnosing and treating concussions by looking things like blood markers, how exercise influences recovery, how branch chain amino acid supplements influence recovery, and several others. In my position, I consent and enroll patients and their families for studies that they may be eligible for, as well as the other 15 ER studies (non-concussion) we have going on as well, which as also been a great patient-contact experience. I majored in Human Services and Social Justice at GW so that I could explore the emotional aspect of doctor-patient relationships prior to entering the medical field as I figured it was a skill I could take advantage of in college. The major has a significant service-learning component to it, so I was able to intern/volunteer at many medical nonprofits, such as Children's National Medical Center, Make-A-Wish and Children's Cancer Center, and my clinical experience here at CHOP has really added on an additional layer to all of this. I also attend all traumas that come into the trauma bay, which has largely shaped my passion for a career in pediatric emergency medicine. While consenting in studies, I also follow the care of each patient throughout their ER visit so it has been extremely educational in learning medicine as well. I have loved my time here so much that I could go on for days!
